This material poses an ironic “chicken or the egg” scenario – lumber made from newspaper, which comes from trees? Dutch designer Mieke Miejer conceived of “Kranthout,” which is Dutch for “newspaper wood” for the firm vij5 as a new spin on our array of lumber choices. The wood-substitute looks, feels, and acts like lumber, as rolls of newspaper are milled into standard-sized lumber planks. The material itself has similar properties, with wood “grain” and a density that allows you to sand or drill just like real wood. Check out the whole story via the downloadable pdf brochure on vij5′s website.
