Last night I went along to a master class in lighting at the John Cullen showroom on King’s Road, the first of four events taking place over the spring/summer. With important but drastic new energy efficient lighting regulations in place, using the right lighting products in residential projects has never been more important, and John Cullen has the solutions. After a series of detailed demonstrations and inspiring presentations led by the team of experts, I emerged full to the brim with knowledge and ideas, though feeling we only scratched the surface of their expertise.
First off, Sian Parsons, senior designer, and Luke Thomas, lighting designer, took small groups around the specially kitted-out showroom. We were led through the kitchen (bottom), living room (above), bedroom, bathroom and garden, all carefully designed and fitted with the best and most energy efficient lighting technology for each room’s nuances.
There is also a light ‘pod’ (above), a room dedicated to demonstrating the different atmospheres achieved by various lighting products, including the key differences between the almost-extinct incandescent, halogen and LED. Though it was a lot of information to take in, the visual aspect made it easily digestible, and prompted a few awkward questions (which were, of course, answered without a pause). It really showed how the right lighting in the right place could transform a residential project.
With all those ideas fresh in our minds, we were then treated to a presentation by Sally Storey, design director of John Cullen, who used her own stunning portfolio of projects to show us how best to put them into practice. Referring to a huge variety of room and project type, Sally explained which products she used where and why, showing how low-energy lighting can produce dramatic results in any project.
The three remaining events will take place 6 – 8pm on 15th March, 10th May and 21st June at the John Cullen Showroom, 561 – 563 Kings Road, London SW6 2EB.
Tickets cost £25 and can be booked by contacting the Showroom Coordinator on 020 7371 5400.
