The OregonianBlue star creeper (Laurentia fluviatilis) makes an excellent ground cover.1. With the cool weather we’ve been having, annuals may be looking leggy. Clip them back and spray with a liquid fertilizer.

2. Check plants before watering. Too much water can be just as bad as not enough. So stick your finger in the soil. For hanging baskets, lift them up; if they’re light, water. Be especially vigilant with newly planted things.

3. Make sure tomato cages are in place. Soon it will be too late.

4. Control mosquitoes by adding nontoxic Mosquito Dunks or Mosquito Bits to water features. The beneficial bacteria kill the larvae. Lasts for about 30 days.

5. Ground covers work hard. They soften steps or flagstone, keep down weeds and, used between plants, give a finished look to the garden. As you take walks or visit public gardens or friends and family, pay attention to the ground covers you like and shop now, when nurseries have an abundance.
